Introducing the Best School Web Design Competition

The Academic Web Design Competition was held for the first time in 1996, as one of the highlights of the Second Hong Kong Web Symposium held in conjunction with the Asia Pacific Web 96 Conference. This first one was open to both individual students from schools and universities, and to schools. Since then, it has become completely group-oriented; students must enter as a group under the banner of their school.

Schools in Hong Kong and Macau are invited to submit their web-based projects (these could include official school web pages as well as student team projects). Results of the earlier competitions are still available for reference by accessing http://www.ssrc.hku.hk/sym/. The French International School was the champion in 1996, St Joseph's College the champion in 1997, with Shau Kei Wan Government Secondary School trailing a close second in both years. It will be interesting to see who will win in April 1998!

This competition is one of the highlights of the Fourth Hong Kong Web Symposium (April 9-12), which is to act as a pre-conference site of the prestigious Seventh International World Wide Web Conference (April 14-18), that will be held in Brisbane, Australia. Schools should consult the programme and schedules of the Symposium. All entering school teams will be invited to attend the Students Morning on Sunday 12 April for the final judging and presentation of prizes.

In order to allow schools more time to develop or enhance their webs over Christmas and the Chinese New Year holiday when they have a little more time, the closing date of the 1998 competition will be 27 February. We are negotiating with technology compancies and ISPs to provide prizes again this year which will be kept by schools for the use of a wider number of students.

The judging panel and judging criteria

The judging panel is, as before, headed by Dr. Jeffrey Day of The University of Hong Kong and a member of CRUCIAL (The Centre for Resources and Understanding in Cross-curricular Instruction and Learning), a funded project led by Dr. Leung Kin Ping of the Hong King Institute of Education to develop cross-curricular resources for shared use in schools.

Please see the conditions for entry and the judging criteria.
